Executive Board Meeting

January 4, 2007

Quinnipiac University - Hamden

 

I.          The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am.

 

II.         Board introductions were made.

 

III.       Public Comment/ Notes from the CLA Office:  None.

 

IV.       Additions to the Agenda and/or Action Items: None

 

V.        Approval of Minutes:  The minutes of December 7, 2006 were passed with the following correction: B. Bray noted the following correction under Nominations:  sentence should read “Kathy Leeds has accepted the nomination as Vice-President/President Elect”.   Minutes Passed.

 

VI.       President’s Report:  1/ B. Bailey read letters t o the board from Lt. Governor Kevin Sullivan thanking her for supporting the “Seasons Readings” Holiday Book Drive, and a thank you letter from the UCONN Foundation for CLA’s  check for $750 in support of the Connecticut Book Fair. 2/ A December a meeting was held regarding the CT Book Party.  A kickoff event will take place on Tues. evening at the CLA annual conference and this event will continue until the end of July.  A letter will go out to libraries and friends groups inviting them to participate by donating a portion of their proceeds from book sales.

 

VII.      Treasurer’s Report: None.

 

VIII.     Past President:  No report.

 

IX.       Vice-President: No report.

 

X.        Committee/Section/Roundtable Reports:

 

ACLB:  There are two new directors, Stephanie Jatlow of Case Memorial Library and Stanley Siegel. of Norwalk Public Library. The ACLB conference program will deal with assisting libraries in coping with retiring professionals in the next decade.

 

ALA:   J. Johnston will be attending mid-winter.  Jay asked the board for the board’s views on continuation of ALA/APA (Allied Professional Association) for the directors and librarians.  Jay is in favor of giving the program more time.

 

CLC:  M. Etter noted that CLC will be holding a workshop on Feb. 2nd – Accelerating into the Homestretch: Professional Development for Library Leaders Approaching Retirement at the Wilton Library.  C. Bradley is working with OCLC to offer their products as part of the Co-op Discount program. 

 

Business and Economic Development:  Norma reported that this section is in the beginning stages if planning a spring workshop.

 

Career Recruitment: C. Bradley read a letter requesting a volunteer to participate in the Girl Scout’s CT Trail Council Women in Career Expo on 3/11.  

 

CEMA:  CEMA and Mentoring are beginning work together.  A workshop will be held on April 30th on Standardized Testing in CT.  More information will be available later.

 

Children’s:  Speakers are in place for the annual conference.

 

Conference: all time slots are filled and the exhibit mailing went on Jan. 2nd.  There will be a reception at the Hartford Public Library for Leslie Burger and jazz concert on Tuesday at Capitol Community College.  The 2008 conference will be held April 28-30th.

 

CSL:  S. Brettschneider’s report included updates on 1/ iCONN – libraries are encouraged to download an iCONN animated banner as for use on their own websites.  2/ Many workshops will be sponsored by the State Library from March to June. Registration is available online at CT WebJunction.  3/ New Ccar procedures became effect on Jan. 2nd. 4/ A reminder to visit BlogJunction Connection at CT.WebJunction.org/blog. 5/ the next round of LSTA grants have been announced.

 

Editorial. This committee will meet following the board meeting.  All CLA awards and scholarship information are posted on the CLA website. 

 

Legislative: C. Bradley informed the board that a Legislative Committee meeting will be held on Jan. 11th followed by a links workshop at 3:00.  All board members are invited.

 

Membership: There were 3 new members during the month of December and the membership stands at 837.  Work is proceeding on a new brochure.

 

NELA:  Counterparts will be held in July and will be going back to a one-day event.  Date and location will be announced later.

 

Publicity:  The library photo exhibit will be on display at the Legislative Office Building April 16-30th.  Over 400 photos will be on display and an effort is underway to get every library to share a photo for this exhibit. CEMA will be soliciting school photos.

 

YA:  Speaker Chris Butcher (Pam check this authors spelling) for their Nov. 30, 2007 conference.

 

Region V: Both the Westbrook and Guilford libraries will be moving during renovation projects. 

 

Vivian Bordeaux:  The Black Caucus committee is being allowed to set up a membership table at the Martin Luther King Day program which will be held at the Peabody Museum in New Haven.   Pam:  can you check with Vivian on this _ I don’t if they are sponsoring the program. She also said something about the Black Caucus and career recruitment scholarships but I have difficulty hearing her.
