1. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am. Karen Ronald welcomed the board to the Trumbull Library.
II. Board Introduction: The board was introduced.
III. Public Comments/Notes from the CLA Office: None.
IV. Additions to the Agenda and/or Action Items:
Nutmeg Committee: M. Simpson asked the board for CLA’s continued support of the Nutmeg Awards in the amount of $500. See motion below.
2006 Public Library Association Conference in Boston: B. Bray reported that all of the New England State Library Associations will receive the ALA member rate to attend the 2006 PLA meeting in Boston. This discount will be offered in the form of a coupon to be included in the mailing of CLA’s welcome letter and membership card at the time of the 2005/2006 dues renewal. Betsy and the conference committee are working on a site for the CLA conference in 2006.
V. Votes Taken:
M. Simpson moved that the CLA Executive Board donate $500.00 to the Nutmeg Book Awards.
J. Johnston seconded. MOTION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY.
P. Ciparelli moved to accept the minutes of September 2, 2004. M. Hasskarl seconded. MOTION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY.
K. Browne moved to accept the Connecticut Library Association Legislative Agenda, FY 2006-7 as presented. N. Wood seconded. MOTION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY.
VI. President’s Report: C. Bradley attended the CEMA Fall Festival and this will be reported on under CEMA’s.
VII. Treasurer’s Report: J. Fisher did not have a formal report at this time due to a change in the bank statement dates. A report will be given in November. The Schwab account balance in $103,466.
VIII. Past President: No report.
IX. Vice President: No report.
X. Committee/Section/Roundtable Reports:
ACLB: S. Lee submitted a written report on the 5th Annual Leadership Conference. There were over 100 attendees and a full write up will be published in CT Libraries and the ACLB Digest. Thanks were given to the Connecticut Library Consortium and the State Library for their support.
ADA: This committee met in September and is planning a program at the annual conference on services for the blind.
ALA: J. Johnston reported; 1/ The 2005 CLA conference program will be on Grants, Scholarships and Fellowships: What ALA Can do for you...2/ The Soaring to Excellence series toolkits for advancing your career teleconferences are available. 3/ ALA members are urged to help shape the 2005 Advocacy Institute by completing an online survey: www:ala.org/advocacy survey. 4/ Teen read week is October 17-23rd. 5/ S. Brooks noted that there is a new support staff rate of $35.00 to join ALA. 6/ C. Bradley said that the CLC will be sponsoring a bus to the ALA meeting in Boston, on Sunday, for those interested in exhibits. The exhibit pass costs $25.00.
CEMA: The successful Fall Festival was held at J. Timothy’s in Plainfield. The 2004 CEMA Conference will be held Nov. 7-8th at the Radisson Hotel in Cromwell. Annette Lamb will deliver the keynote address.
Children’s: One hundred plus attended the Jt. Children’s roundtable on October 4th. Eighty five
Libraries were represented and Walter Wick was terrific, stated co-chair J. Rabin. A report from the roundtable will be in the next issue of CT Libraries.
Career Recruitment: The next committee meeting will be held on October 15th.
CLASS: This section is wrapping up the final details of their fall program.
College and University: A conference program on web logs is being planned along with one on reference.
Conference: Many program proposals have been received. All of them are needed by Nov. 1st. Authors luncheons are being planned as well as a tour of the Yale libraries. A children’s pre-conference on “fairy tales” will be held. There will be a “one-book” for the conference written by local author Regina Barreca.
Connecticut State Library: S. Brettschneider reported: 1/ Approximately 25 libraries are participating in the data collection survey that is being conducted to determine the costs of loaning materials to non-residents. The results of the survey will be reported on Dec. 3rd at the Legislative Office Building. Contact Sharon for more info on this project. 2/ The State Library is working with Miranda Graphics to develop materials for a campaign of Connecticut Libraries: It’s Never Too Early. The materials will be distributed at a series of PR workshops. Contact S. Cormier for more information (scormier@cslib.org). 3/ The State Library has joined a collaborative summer reading program group of approximately 30 state and regional libraries. 4/ On February 16th and 17th, the CSL will sponsor Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library training from the Public Library Association.5/ The State Library’s 150th Anniversary Gala will be held on October 23rd. 6/ A new director’s workshop will be held on Friday, November 19th, jointly sponsored by CLC/CSL, about services at the State Library.
Editorial: October 20th is the deadline for the newsletter.
Friends: M. Engels reported for the friends. 1/ The friends will be co-sponsoring Regina Barreca’s program at the annual conference. 2/ Two of the fall workshops: An Evening Among Friends, have been held. 3/ The friends will co-sponsor a program with the public library section on selling books on the internet. 4/ The membership drive in underway.
Intellectual Freedom: P. Chase announced that Betty Boukus will be receiving a library award in Plainville next week. Also, the CLA board will be meeting in Plainville’s new library in February. This section will co-sponsor a conference program with the children’s section on challenged books.
Legislative: K. Browne will be leaving for California, and C. Bradley thanked her for all of her work on behalf of the CLA legislative committee. P. Ciparelli has agreed to serve as legislative co-chair. K. Browne presented the Legislative Agenda, FY 2006-7 to the board. The five addenda items were accepted as presented. (see motion above) The board recommended some wording changes and these were noted. The five items presented concerned funding for the Connecticut Library Consortium, Public Library Construction grants, funding for Connecticard, revised statutory language on Confidentiality of Library records and iCONN funding. The next meeting of this committee will take place on October 17th at the Middletown Library Service Center and a full copy of the report is available in the CLA office.
NELA: There were approx. 700 attendees at the September conference. Thanks to M. Golrick, CT won the “snail” for the first time. A NELA sponsored program that will travel to all six states will be presented by NELINET,
Publicity: Digital Photography: Part 2, will be held on Nov. 22nd. This committee is looking for new members – please contact B. Reiter with any names of persons at your library doing publicity.
Technical Services: The fall
program will be held at the Portland Library on Oct. 28th on
collection development.
YA: November 10th is the date of the 3rd Annual Joint Roundtable and Showcase.
Regional Reps: Mary Lou Wigley, Region 1 Rep, will be replaced due to retirement. B. Baldino reported on library construction in Region 4. F. Aloisa, Region 3 noted library budget cuts in her region and a new Director at Suffield.
