I. The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am.
II. The board was introduced.
III. Public Comment and Notes from the CLA Office: K. Zoller announced that there will be a holiday luncheon following the December board meeting. A notice will be mailed out with these minutes.
IV. Additions to the Agenda and/or Action Items: None.
V. Votes Taken:
H. Keeler moved to accept the minutes of October 14, 2004. A. Burgan seconded. Two corrections were noted in the Legislative section: On line 4 - change addenda to agenda, and the date of the next committee meeting should be changed to October 27th. MOTION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY.
VI. President’s Report: 1/ An Ad Hoc committee has been formed to look at certification of libraries and librarians, and this group will be meeting today following the board meeting. 2/ Leslie Berger, Princeton New Jersey Public Library, has been nominated as a presidential candidate for ALA. Leslie is a former Connecticut librarian... 3/ The Connecticut Library Consortium will sponsor a legislative reception at the New Haven Lawn Club on December 8th.
VII. Treasurer’s Report: There is a balance of $38,549 in the checking account, and $103,466 in the Schwab investment account.
VIII. Past President: No Report.
IX. Vice President: 1/ A. Knapp, A. Barney and B. Bray spent a day looking at potential conference locations for 2006. . 2/ Alice will be meeting with the membership co-chairs following this meeting.
X. Committee/Section/Roundtable Reports:
ACLB: A full ACLB board meeting will take place in December. Simone Joyeaux will speak on fundraising at the annual conference ACLB program.
ALA: 1/ Leslie Berger has been invited to participate in the CLA/ALA program at the annual conference. 2/ Jay would like past recipients of ALA awards/grants to speak at the conference. Please contact him if you know of any of these award winners. 3/ A reminder from C. Bradley: CLC is sponsoring a bus to the ALA meeting in Boston on Sunday.
Awards: The nominating forms are being revised this year and the narrative portion will be limited. Added to the form will be space for a 100 word summary on the nominees qualifications and experience. The awards ceremony will be called “night of recognition” and all nominees will be recognized. Support staff awards will now be the responsibility of the awards committee. One final word from S. Smayda: nominate people!
Business and Economic Development: This section’s three programs have been held with an outstanding one by Morningstar. A program on starting a small business will be held.
Children’s: J. Rabin and M. Simpson reported: The annual book fair at UCONN will take place on Nov. 13-14th. (CLA is a sponsor). The bookseller at the Jt. Children’s roundtable donated $88 to CLA from the sale of books. The children’s preconference on Fairy Tales will be cosponsored by the YA section.
CLASS: P. Perll reported that last Fridays conference had 140 attendees and great evaluations.
College and University: On October 21st, The Weblogs and RSS 101 program with Steven Cohen, was co-sponsored by the College and University Section and CAHSL. Many positive evaluations have been returned from the 55 attendees.
Conference: H. Dutcher and N. Wood reported: 1/ Two pre-conferences will be held. One will be sponsored by the children’s section on fairy tales and the other will be an all day tour of Yale Libraries. 2/ Nancy and Henry hope to have keynote author in place very soon. 3/ Regina Barreca is the one-book author. 4/ Time may not allow for all the program requests received, and the committee will be working on this.
Connecticut State Library: K. Wiggin presented an update from the State Library: 1/ Approximately $300,000 is available in Library Service and Technology Act (LSTA) funding for grants. The grant year is July 1, 2005-June 30, 2006. Applications are available on line at http://ct.webjunction.org. 2/ The State Library has been notified that the Gates Foundation has awarded them a grant in the amount of $163,680 to support public access computing sustainability in public libraries. 3/ Connecticut Libraries: It’s Never Too Early Workshops will be held Nov. 22nd, WLSC, Dec. 7th at the State Libraries Van Block Facility and on Dec.10th at the Case Memorial Library in Orange. 4/ A New Director’s Workshop for public library directors will be held at the MLSC on November 19th. 5/ The State Library will be closed all day November 16th for staff training.
Development: Mary Etter is the newly appointed chair of this committee.
Editorial: Reminder: please get your reading selection to D. Kapp for the December issue of CT Libraries, and web page additions/news to Judy Smith.
Friends: The Friends have completed their fall workshops and will co-sponsor one book author Regina Barreca for the conference.
Legislative: See report on page 4 of these minutes. In addition to this report, the potluck supper co-chairs are Francine Aloisa and Sue Phillips and this annual event will be held on April 6, 2005. K. Wiggin reminded the board to introduce yourself to the newly elected legislators.
Membership: The current membership is 1,106.
NELA: The next board meeting will be held in two weeks.
Publicity: The Digital workshop will be held shortly. This committee will continue to work with the legislative committee on a unified theme.
Reference and Adult: there were over 110 attendees at the fall workshop – The Lost Art of Reader’s Advisory.
YA: The Joint YA/Teen Librarian’s Roundtable will be held next week and a report will be given at the December meeting.
Other: 1/ Regional Reps: T. Conley noted that the new Salem Public Library will be opening next week.
2/ Center for the Book: The 3rd Annual Connecticut Book Award will be held on December 5th. More information is available on the website.
XI. Old Business: None.
XII. New Business: A. Burgan reported that there is legislation pending regarding limiting public access to certain geneology records. More information will be brought to the board in December.
XIII. A motion to adjourn was made at 11:15 am.

LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE REPORT TO
EXECUTIVE
BOARD, 11-4-04
Since the last
Executive Board meeting on October 14, the Legislative Committee:
*Co-sponsored the last two receptions for the three new "library
champion" legislators that CLA is honoring this year:
-Rep. Betty Boukus (Tuesday, Oct 19, 7 PM, Plainville Public Library);
-Senator Donald DeFronzo (Saturday, Oct 23, 10 AM, New Britain Public Library).
Both events were very well attended and well received. Our thanks go to Peter Chase and Pat
Holloway for organizing and hosting these events in their libraries.
*Met on October 27, when we:
-Heard a report from Barry Williams about possible leadership changes in the CT
General Assembly after election day;
-Learned from Ken Wiggin that Marc Ryan will stay at OPM through December 2004;
-Discussed with members of the CLA Publicity Committee who attended the meeting
the design and content of informational materials we will produce in support of
this year’s CLA legislative agenda;
-Reminded members to register (only $10!) for the ALA Legislative Advocacy
workshop on Friday, January 14, 2005
at ALA Midwinter in Boston;
-Updated plans for our CLA conference program next April which will be
presented by ALA Washington Office Executive Director Emily Sheketoff;
-Established April 6, 2005 as the
date of next year’s annual CLA Potluck Supper at the State Library Museum. Sue Phillips and Francine Aloisa will
co-chair this event.
*Scheduled our next meeting for Wednesday, December
8 (New Haven Lawn Club, New Haven; 3 PM – followed by a regional
legislative reception at 5-7 PM).
